In an interview with radio host John Catsimatidis on "The Cats Roundtable" airing Sunday, the former White House chief of staff said the nation is going through "unprecedented times."
"It is one thing to have a soap opera in the campaign, but to continue that in the White House when you shift from campaigning to governing, I don't think that's a good strategy," he said in remarks posted ahead of the show by The Hill.
"I don't think that's a good strategy, and I think President Trump's poll numbers and approval rating reflect that," he said of the leaks that have been damaging the new administration.
"I think this is a pretty fragile and unsteady time for the White House, and they need to get things to settle down," McLarty said. "He has got to broaden that base in order to be a successful president."
McLarty also criticized Trump's claims about being more unfairly than any other politician.
"President Trump has a flare for the dramatics," McLarty said. "He sometimes in my opinion, respectfully, personalizes things too much. Everything seems to be a bit too much frankly about him."
Critics come from both sides of the aisle,he pointed out, adding: "Right now emotions are running pretty high, and that is not good for our country in my opinion."
